Good afternoon.

Time really flies doesn’t it It’s already the end of the retreat

is everyone clear that the event we are joining today is about Chan or meditation?

if it’s really a meditation retreat, why is it that there is only very short, limited amount of time on doing sitting practice?

As anyone, if only just a tiny we bits, feeling disappointed that we didn’t get more time on practicing the sitting Chan.

OK here I need to make a clear point I need to make it clear about the fact that meditation is not equivalent to sitting meditation

Of course, the sitting practice is one common form of Chan.

When we’re doing the sitting practice it makes it easier for us to settle down 當我們安定了之後啊。

once we have settled down our minds it becomes easier to apply The concepts and the essence of Chan

yeah as I mentioned the sitting practice itself is only a beneficial assistance way to help yourself settle down But it is not the equivalent of charm itself

does anyone know that what we’re trying to get out of practicing Chan?

throughout the whole session today, having done many different kinds of practice, the main purpose of all of that All comes down to cultivating awareness.

Regardless of which school or which theory of meditation that you learn. We all need mething called the awareness.

then again, what is awareness? OK, awareness means that we are clearly awakening, as as becoming. Enlighten.

the second character of the Chinese term for awareness also has the meaning of being clearly, being clear and conscious about things.

throughout all the practice items that we have done today, the entire purpose of all of that process is to Allow everyone to cultivate and develop the ability of being aware, clearly, and consciously about everything.

Ok, in the first session today, remember how we got it through the sitting practice in the morning? the purpose of that was touh, Guide everyone into knowing how to learn, to settle down our minds.

And following that, we also adopted the moving meditation. through these movements, we were also trying to Allow everyone to develop the ability of awareness through each single movement, and the moving Chan.

As as that, also, after, later on, when we were practicing the eating Chan, the working Chan, as as the sleeping Chan. All of these items, in their different forms, we are all trying to make everyone develop such conscious. Ability, and staying aware and clear.

wise, and the afternoon, we also adopted the second part of the sitting practice session, as as the drawing session. All of which are designed for the purpose of helping everyone to develop the ability of being aware.

OK, even the ability of staying aware can be divided up into different levels. since I believe that most of us here today are beginners of meditation or chant, we have simplified the steps, in a way that we have used me more Commonly easily understood terms. such as being clear, or being conscious, or staying focused, or concentrated, in order to allow everyone To take things more easily, and pick them up more easily in the practice sessions.

in order to reach a deeper level of awareness, it takes more relaxation as the preliminary stages. Hence, thi- this is the reason that through all the items today, we have been emphasizing the idea of being relaxed.

keeping ourselves relaxed, or the idea of being clear about knowing what’s going on, are very simple concepts that can be easily applied and achieved. For us ordinary people, in our daily routines.

OK, just from what I personally observed, that throughout the whole retreat today, most of you seem to be quite relaxed and being in a good mood. During most of this sessions today, in my right.

as I previously mentioned, we can only achieve the profound and deep level of awareness. If only only when we’re in a state of being relaxed

OK, yeah, from what I see today, everyone seemed to be able to keep themselves in a very clear s- and relax state. you may use that as a foundation for further progress and improvement of the application for for your daily routines.

the application and practice of Chan can be utilized and harmonized with every part of our daily routine.

OK, I do personally encourage everyone that we can apply and utilize everything that we learn today. and through our daily routine, because chanting is indeed every bit of our daily lives. It does not necessary mean that you have to always find a regular time and spot to do Sitting practice in a certain stable posture, that is only one form of pra- of the practice of Chan, and alsouh, our life. you may use all kinds of forms or practicing methods, or just purely anything that you’re doing in your life. A part of your practice of Chan.

Ok for the rest of the time I will be handing the microphone to you Whether there are any thoughts, concerns or questions that you would to ask before we end today’s retreat.

OK, I would to ask, I have an inquiry about the art Chan, and the last part of the afternoon. I seem to realize that, when I’m in the moment of drawing, I Tend to be more distracted easily, especially in that environment where my attention will be easily attracted by external factors outside. Instead of keeping that into my inner mind, and staying aware throughout the whole session. as comparison to other practices such as a sitting or standing meditation, those seem to be more easier, and keeping my s- mind settled and focused. Yeah, but for the other ones, for the art Chan. I can’t seem to do that that easily.

That’s a very good question. as part of the charm method, the main purpose is to train our mind.

In order to train our mind, we also need to have a good environment with space.

that means we need to find ourselves. mething that we can place our attention on, because that exact thing is what we need in order to focus on the practice itself. Eventually, making our minds stay settled for a longer period.

in Chan, there are many ways to practice. Just for example, the keeping re-, yourself relaxed or staying clear aboutuh, Your fee-, current feelings, yeah, and as as other ways such as contemplation, and also. Counting your breath.

In the Chan school, there is also a method of practice called the Huatou, Chan Huatou.

And Theravada Buddhism, there is also a concept and a series of teaching c- called in Chinese, guan- guan si nian chu.

In Tibetan Buddhism, there is also mething called. The practice of chanting mantras

all of these methods are designed in order to help practitioners to settle our minds and stay focused.

In the entanglement during art session, in the afternoon, what we’re trying to do is to make everyone, through The action of drawing focus your mind, and also settling your mind on what you’re doing at that present moment, not being distracted. But fully aware on what you’re doing.

by focusing our mind on a specific target, I, for example, the pictures we’re drawing, we’re trying to avoid ourselves from Letting our mind wander off and scattered.

The ultimate purpose is not to try to achieve a certain result or objective

But instead, what we’re trying to do is to place our attention and focus on the process of the practice itself. Settling our mind at all times during the entire process, and also on the details of each moment.

Ok, remember how at the end of the drawing session, the teacher made us, write their names on their productions at the end of the session. And then later on, telling everyone to go around and looking at other people’s artworks without any. Thoughts of discrimination or comparison, this indeed is objective of the practice of Chan in the drawing session. We are trying to Observe and be aware of the things we see without having any thoughts of discrimination. This itself is called The view, or the perception of China.

Ok, through the different practices that we had today, there might be times that you felt me discomfort on the body, or distractions on the mind. However, you can still manage to shift your focus back. And to your practice, and staying aware, and continue to contemplate, and still being able to finish the entire session, that itself is applying Chan. To our daily lives no matter what we face we will not try to escape from the difficulties or challenges or theuh misfortunes on life that itself is also part of chum

through practicing charm, the main idea is not that we’re trying to get rid of, or re- adicate all the misfortunes, or The laments that we may face in our daily routine, that is not the objective of chanting.

But rather, we’re, what we’re trying to do is try to still stay unaffected. Even under the impact of these external factors in our surrounding environments, we should always be able to stay aware. Know the feelings and worries that arises in our minds, and the pains that arises upon our physical bodies, but still, know them, but stay unaffected. And continue to complete everything that we’re doing.

Does that answer your question?

Can I ask you another question a further question

Yes, it has come to me that me, when I’m engaging myself in the certain practice, there were me times that I felt me discom- comfort. And also, if I had to describe my awareness and focus, it’s a penetrating light that is showing on. The piece of paper that when I was drawing in. I’m just curious that if my focus is. Shifted away from that exact light, then I would start to feel that my body is becoming more stiff. how exactly? Do I avoid this issue?

OK, you, you, yeah, you find, you may be finding that difficult, because that you’re putting your focus and attention on the wrong part. Yeah, you’re you seem to be focusing your attention on the part that you are feeling stuff on your body.

how we can go about this is by acknowledging the cause of the pain first, of course, but then again. Through the means of Chan, we can try to shift the pain into another form, or another place.

if we take this further down, that you’ll realize that the feeling of pain is just a feeling.

such feeling of pain is a manifestation or creation of. The sense of me. We’re the ones who created this feeling, we’re the ones defining this feeling.

the objective of practicing Chan, in the ultimate sense, is to remove this sense of self. That lies within us. Another words, we’re trying to reach the state of no self.

Ok, furthermore, it is exactly this sense of self that lies within us. Creates and intensifies the feeling of pain. It is all a phenomenon caused by ourselves, the sense of self.

as you reach a certain level where you can adicate or weaken this sense of self. Then you will on realize that the original feeling of such pain. Will start to gradually decrease bit by bit.

But then again, please do not misconceive this idea in a way that, if I practice Chan, could it be that one day I can develop me s- supernatural power? And that I can use that to get rid of all these causes of pain in my surroundings.

through Chan, we are, as we practice Chan, we will gradually start to realize that all of these Phenomenon, including the pain and suffering that we feel. Are all just a result of countless conditions in their surrounding environment. then again, through Chan, we will learn how to use the wisdom of that, in order to break this s- sense of self. In a way that we no longer will keep further. Try to hold on to these fake phenomenon tightly, which would eventually cause further pain to ourselves in an unnecessary way.

OK, again, through these charm practices, we will practice to think in a way that all of these things are just Temporary feelings and phenomena, just the clouds in the sky, how they come and go. they will one day disappear oner or longer. yeah, once we start to perceive everything causing our pain in this way, we will start to not be affected much by all the Misfortune or unhappy things and vexations that comes to us. we will not continue to always. Keep ourselves stuck in such a vicious cycle.

Of course, after listening to many special terms, such as sense of self, or selflessness, or causes and conditions. You might start to think, this is beyond me, it’s uncompendable. But it’s one day, as long as we have come to the point that we are able to apply. The essence, the essence of Chan to s- co- common conditions that we face, then we will s- begin to realize that Sean is not mething un-, unimaginable or un-, comprehensible. It is deeply connected to our daily lives.

Do we have any other questions

i- i- if we practice sitting meditation every day for 10 years, I’m a beginner right now. But if I do it every day for 10 years, what do you think is the main difference I will see in 10 years?

Ok as long as you stick to your daily practice routines without taking any breaks then I can assure you that they would There is definitely going to be a big difference 差別就像呃現在你會 cooking

OK, take your cooking skills for example. Through Chan, if you continue to apply the correct methods. Then your skills will continue to enhance, as you build up your method along the way. Because. It does not matter what we do in our daily lives, as long as you can. Do that more in the correct method, then one day you will start to realize that, I’m doing the same thing, but it’s becoming more, I’m doing it more efficiently, because I’m more familiar with that. this is the same as charm practice. The more familiar you are, then the better. The results that you will get.

OK, this is what I previously kept emphasizing and reminding everyone, the point that, the the chant that we learn today, all the different forms of chant practice should be mething that we should all bring home. And utilize and apply to everything we do in our lives. If you’re only doing it for fun, or for a casual, occasional experience. Then of course, it’s not really gonna get you anywhere. But rather, if you make that as part of your daily routine, or harmonizing it. And to whatever that you’re doing in your lives, then that would ultimately, eventually make a very significant difference.

Do we have any further questions, anyone?

Your questions may benefit those of others, feel free to bring up anything. Related to Chan.

OK, I would to do a little sharing, and I also welcome Jason to give me me feedback. when I was drawing in the drawing session. Yeah, metimes I try to draw straight lines, or metimes I try to draw curves. And there are me times that I try to avoid drawings in a certain way. during those moments, I start to realize that, if I intentionally try to draw mething, or if I intentionally try not to draw mething, then that would make me wonder, and also, this is mething related to what Zhangjing just asked previously. that if we are trying to draw anything, we’d do anything without a certain intention, and without grabbing any anything. Is is that try trying to

This is this should be my one of my好奇 OK I I don’t really have a question but I’m just curious about what exactly is the state of being Harmonized without a certain sense of separation between myself and the artwork that I’m drawing What exactly is the quality or essence of this such state?

through chant, as we keep practicing and continue to broaden up our minds, and integrating. Yourselves with the environment. Once we get to that state, we start to harmonize with the environment itself, becoming the one without any separations. In other words, this is also the selflessness that I was emphasizing on previously. once we reach the state of selflessness, we would eventually no longer tend to s- continue to have discrimination. Separating things from ourselves, and themselves. third charm, the purpose is also to get rid of such selfless, this s- sense of self. Also, the dualism, which means we separate two things, we start to differentiate and discriminate between different things. The purpose of practicing Chan is also to cultivate and develop this natural ability that lies within us.

hmm, Thank you for your sharing. do we have any other further questions, anybody?

OK, thank you for your attentions. I guess we’re all al- also about time. finally, I would just to make a few remarks to encourage everyone today that try to apply and use all the methods we learn today in your lives. Keep that as a habit, as part of your daily routine, in order. For that to be beneficial for yourself.

having said that, Chan is not mething mysterious, but it’s just a result of countless conditions. It’s a phenomenon, just the sun or the breeze outside.

Yeah, oftentimes, we don’t really see the true nature of many things, because we’re all perceiving things in the surrounding environment. Based on our own limited framework, we’re all stuck and limited by the sense of self that we have. Everything we see, it’s just a phenomenon, it’s all fake and biased. through the practice of Chan. We can try to continue, and eventually break the sense of self, and keep our mind state clear. Eventually, seeing the true nature of all the different conditions and causes and our surroundings.

When we have Chan’s these methods when we go to face our real life the all these things

once we start to be able to perceive the true nature, and the causes and effects of everything. And our surroundings, then we will ultimately reach a state of liberation, where we will no longer be overly attached. To all the things that impact us, to all the things that affect us, causing us pain and sufferings. the practice of charm can help ourselves to reach that level, but of course, it does not mean that we can use Chan as a form of supernatural ability to Get rid of or adicate the causes of stress themselves. but rather, we are just trying to adjust our own mindset, and taking ourselves to a high level where we can see the truth of this changing phenomenon.
